DIY Geometric Floral Door Hanger

Spring is in the air! And you know what that means, right? Putting away the winter door wreath and breaking out the spring one!

I was getting ready to pull out my spring tulip wreath when I thought about trying something a little different. It all started when I was browsing Pinterest looking for some floral inspiration.

Pretty idea and unique take on a spring wreath! This geometric floral door hanger is gorgeous and a budget friendly way to create a unique spring decoration.

That’s when a gorgeous geometric floral wedding decoration caught my eye.

This happens to me a lot with wedding decorations. I see something that is just so beautiful and I wish that it was a practical “real life” decoration. If only wedding life was everyday life!

Wedding decorations look so pretty for a ceremony or reception, but they don’t really fit into home decor. Or do they?

That’s when I had the idea to create a pretty, geometric floral “wreath.” Except, it wouldn’t really be a wreath at all, but more of a door hanger.

So, instead of breaking out my spring door wreath, I decided to DIY a spring door hanger!

Let me show you how I made it! PSST! It’s a lot easier than it looks – and a lot cheaper too!

Supplies:

Start by cutting your straws to a few different lengths. For the large geometric shape, you will need:

  • 4 – 5.5” pieces
  • 4 – 4” pieces
  • 4 – 3.5” pieces

For the small geometric shape, you will need:

  • 4 – 4.5” pieces
  • 4 – 3” pieces
  • 4 – 2.5” pieces

I’m going to show you how to make the large geometric shape, but the process for the small one is the same.

Take the four 4” straws and arrange them to make a square. Then, using a hot glue gun, glue the straws together at the corners.

Next, grab your four 5.5” straws. These will be used to create the four triangular sides of the geometric shape.

Start with two of the 5.5” straws and glue them to opposite corners of the square base. Angle the straws so that they touch at the top point and use glue to attach them together.

You will have to hold the straws in place for a little while as the hot glue dries. Don’t worry about the glue looking messy, you won’t notice any extra glue once the geometric shape is painted.

Now, take the other two 5.5” straws and glue them to the remaining corners of the square base. Angle the straws so that they meet the other two straws at the top point. Use hot glue to attach everything together.

At this point, you should have a shape that looks like a pyramid.

Turn your pyramid on its side and grab the four 3.5” straws.

Now you are going to repeat the process that you did before to attach the smaller straws and create a smaller pyramid.

This part is a little trickier because you don’t have a flat base to work with anymore. I put some hot glue on the opposite corners of the squares and used both hands to hold the straws in place and angle them properly so that they met at a point.

Once your four shorter straws are attached, you will have a shape that looks like this!

To make the small geometric shape, I repeated this whole process with the smaller set of cut straws.

Once your shapes are assembled, it’s time to paint them.

Spray the shapes with a light coat of gold spray paint. Make sure to use short, sweeping motions when you paint. You don’t want to paint to be too thick and great runny gobs on your shape.

I did a couple of coats of paint to make sure I covered all sides of the shapes and that no red stripes were visible from the straws.

Now that your shapes are completely dried, it’s time to add some florals! I grabbed an assortment of greenery and smaller florals from Hobby Lobby.

I love the green plant because it had a vine-like quality to it and it draped really well. I wanted something that would wrap around the sides of the geometric shape and look realistic.

I’m going to show you what I did with these flowers, but you can use whatever florals that you like.

Use your scissors to cut the bunches of flowers apart into smaller pieces. That way you can create arrangements for the geometric shapes more easily.

To decorated the geometric shapes, I started with the smaller shape first.

First, add the greenery. To create a smaller bunch, I cut off two strands of the vines, cut them in half so they were shorter, and glued the four small pieces together at one end.

Then, I glued the top of the vines to the top of the small geometric shape and let the vines fall down the side of the shape.

To make sure they stayed where I wanted them, I used a little more hot glue to attach the middle of the vines to the side of the shape and left the bottoms free.

Next, attach your flowers. Using some hot glue, I attached a small bunch of the pink flowers and a small bunch of the purple flowers.

To decorate the large geometric shape, I attached the flowers first. I glued a larger bunch of purple flowers onto the side of the shape first, and the glued on a smaller bunch of the pink flowers.

Next, add your greenery. I cut off four strands of the vine and left them full length this time. I glued them all together at one end and then attached that end to the top of the geometric shape.

Again, let the vines drape down the side of the shape. I guided the vines around the flowers and used hot glue to hold the greenery where I wanted on the side of the shape.

Once the glue has dried, you will have two gorgeous floral geometric shapes! Now it’s time to hang them up.

First, place a small 3M hook on your door. Then, cut two pieces of fishing wire and string them through the tops of each geometric shapes.

Working one shape at a time, grab the fishing wire with one hand and hold your hand up to the hook.

Pull the wire shorter or let the wire out to determine where you want the shape to hang on the door. Once you have a good estimate of the location, tie a knot in the fishing wire and loop the wire over the 3M hook.

Repeat for the other geometric shape. Make sure you stagger the two shapes so that they are not exactly equal lengths on your door.

Tada! You have a beautiful, geometric floral door hanger! Doesn’t it remind you of a gorgeous wedding decoration?

I love how this project turned out! The gold spray paint makes basic straws look a lot more high end. These literally look like metal terrariums that you would pay lots of money for at the store.

You could even make these geometric shapes just for decorations in your home. And you totally don’t have to tell anyone that they are straws. That can be our little budget decor secret!
